What is free play, exactly? As opposed to structured play, free or unstructured play is a period of amusement that has not been organized by an adult and that does not use any entertainment system, such as a video game. In short, it means leaving children to lead their own fun. The child initiates and directs the game, comes up with the objectives, defines how it unfolds and decides on the outcome.

Universally, children’s play has always existed, essential to life, balance, and their development. The child is a generator of endless ideas, a being with a boundless imagination, and a designer of the future. But when it comes to inventing what is best for the child, are we really listening?

Free play, which is even better when it is outdoors, has only positive effects. It’s logical! Nothing is more normal and natural for a child than to play. With play comes along a range of learning opportunities for children that foster their mental, intellectual and motor development.

While there is a consensus regarding the fact that a return to free play is necessary for the development and well-being of children, the winning conditions to foster this must still be brought together! What are they ?

The Adventure Lab, a brand new, Jambette signature, exclusive free play concept. In partnership with Patro de Lévis and with the collaboration of specialists from the area, this visionary project will be launched in summer 2019, to discover kids’ interests when it comes to free play. Many adults nostalgically remember the time when they took pleasure in exploring and creating their own games. However, as much happiness as it brought to every generation of children, free play has virtually disappeared today.

The ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth is the most comprehensive assessment of child and youth physical activity in Canada.  This year, the 2018 edition taught us that a growing body of research has begun to examine the benefits of childhood physical activity  in relation to brain health.
