How to plan a park project without overshooting your budget!

Planning a new park layout is a motivating project. Whether it is for a municipality, a school, or a daycare centre, the goal is always the same: to create a safe and stimulating space that brings the community together. However, many projects exceed their initial budget, often due to a lack of information at the outset.

Good news is, it is entirely possible to optimize your investment through structured planning.

1. Start by clearly defining your needs

Before even browsing modules, ask yourself the right questions:

  • What age group is the park layout intended for?
  • Is it replacing an existing layout, or is it a brand new one?
  • Do you want to improve an existing park or start from scratch?

The clearer your objective, the more suitable and realistic the proposed solutions will be.

2. Set an overall budget (not just for the play structure)

The play structure is only one part of the whole project. You also need to consider:

  • Protective zones
  • Shock-absorbing surfaces
  • Excavation and landscaping
  • Drainage
  • Transport and installation

It is not uncommon for a client to set aside a specific budget for a play structure without assessing the associated infrastructure costs. Comprehensive planning helps avoid unpleasant surprises.

3. Check the available space

The size of the site has a direct impact on the type of equipment that can be installed. A 6 x 6 metres area does not offer the same possibilities as a large municipal park. Clearance standards and existing constraints (trees, buildings, existing play structures) must also be taken into account.

An on-site visit or a detailed plan helps optimize the installation in phase 1... while keeping in mind a possible phase 2.

4. Incorporate grants from the outset

For many municipalities and schools, obtaining a grant is crucial. A park layout proposal from Jambette containing a clear, detailed, and well-structured quote becomes a strategic tool for presenting the project to a municipal council or school service centre.

Planning in accordance with the timelines of financial support programs helps secure the budget without unnecessarily delaying the project.

5. Think long term

Even if your current budget is limited, smart planning allows you to anticipate future growth. Strategically positioning an initial play structure makes future additions easier and helps get the most out of every dollar invested.

Client checklist

Before requesting a quote

To speed up the process and get an accurate proposal, make sure you have the following at the ready:

☐ The approximate budget allocated to the project
☐ The target age group
☐ The exact dimensions of the available space
☐ Recent photos of the site
☐ Information about existing installations (play area[2] , surfacing[3] , play structures to be removed)
☐ Your timelines (current year, pending funding, future planning)
☐ Any special constraints (restricted access, neighbourhood, specific regulations)

A well-planned project is one that stays within budget, and that fully meets the needs of its community.

At Jambette, we believe that a great park layout doesn't start with a catalogue, but with a conversation.
