Inside our designers’ minds: creating more than just a play structure!

At Jambette, designing a play structure isn't only about putting materials together. It's about dreaming up an adventure, structuring an experience... and transforming an idea into a space where children can move, daydream, and grow.

Contrary to popular belief, designers are not artists left alone in front of a blank page. They are first and foremost rigorous planners. Each project begins with a specific brief: dimensions, desired functions, preferred materials, budget, installation constraints and such. The clearer the framework, the more effectively can creativity be expressed.

Themes often stem from the market and customer needs. Aviation, nature, urban environments, etc. But behind every theme lie specific choices: what kind of structure? At what height? Which functionality? Design is never decorative; it meets a need.

Inspiration can be derived from many sources, like architecture and everyday objects, and even from technological tools, such as artificial intelligence, which is used during the concept phase to explore different avenues. But in the end, the concept must face real-life challenges: technical feasibility, material limitations, manufacturing capacity, and production costs.

Above all, there are safety standards. They guide every decision. Safety standards can sometimes be the most challenging constraint in the process, but they’re also just as crucial. Designing for children means designing responsibly.

Creating a play structure also means designing for three audiences at the same time:

  • The child, who will enjoy the experience.
  • The parent, who watches and reassures.
  • The buyer or manager, who must invest in durable and reliable equipment.

Design then becomes a balancing act: aesthetics, sturdiness, fun, standards compliance, durability. A series of smart compromises.

At Jambette, every line, every colour, and every shape has a purpose. Beauty is not incidental: it attracts, it enhances public spaces, it contributes to the experience. But it never replaces function.

When a play structure is finally installed in a park and children spontaneously take to it, that’s when the work takes on its full meaning. That’s when the design comes to life.

And this might be the greatest success: creating structures that stand the test of time... and last for generations.
